European Mindset

Director:Dpto. de Estudios Sociales y Opinón Pública - Fundación BBVA
Date:29/10/2009 - 18/12/2009
Status:Completed
Description:

European Mindset is a public opinion study looking at how Europeans engage with Europe as a political, socioeconomic and cultural space and comparing their values in public domains, like politics and the economy, and more private areas like ethics, religion and the family.

The results of the study show a strong consensus around political and economic values like the market economy or the welfare state, in contrast to the differences persisting between countries with regard to ethical, religious and family values.

Citizens opine on questions like religious practice and the present-day significance of religious ceremonies; euthanasia, abortion or sexual infidelity. The study also invites their views on contemporary social practices like living as a couple without being married, being a lone parent, same-sex marriages or the possibility of gay couples adopting children.
