The award goes to Gabor A. Somorjai for his pioneering contributions to the understanding of surface chemistry and catalysis at a microscopic and molecular level. His work opens new possibilities for the control of key chemical reactions in productive and environmental processes.
Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka wins the award for showing that it is possible to reprogram differentiated cells back into a state that is characteristic of pluripotent cells. His work marks a major advance in translating regenerative medicine from the bench to the clinic
The award has been granted to Edward O. Wilson for coining the term biodiversity and contributing in extraordinary fashion to alert society to its importance. This U.S. naturalist is also the founder of other disciplines like sociobiology, which inquires into the biological bases of human behavior.
U.S. scientist Donald E. Knuth takes the award for “making computing into a science”. His The Art of Computer Programming systematizes the way that human beings talk to machines and is considered the seminal work on computer science.
The award goes to U.S. economist Lars Peter Hansen for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of how economic actors cope with risky and changing environments
German composer Helmut Lachenmann receives the award for creative works which, drawing on an intimate knowledge of the musical past, have enlarged the world of sounds during the last 50 years in a way unmatched by any other contemporary composer
The award goes to Nicholas Stern for quantifying the impacts and costs deriving from the alteration of the planet’s climate. This UK economist is author of the Stern Review, the hugely influential study of the economics of climate change.
The award has been granted to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for its contribution to reducing poverty and hunger in the world by means of rice research and farmer training.
