DESCRIPTION
The present project draws on the theories elaborated by Amartya Sen and John Roemer. Sen’s theory will serve as a base for constructing a cost-opportunity analysis model which supplements the model traditionally used for the economic assessment of healthcare programmes. Applying Sen’s theory, it is postulated that a given patient’s health opportunities equate to the range of health statuses that he or she can aspire to. Therefore, the opportunity gains a health programme offers can be taken as the new health statuses that the patient can access in consequence. Finally, Roemer’s theory is put to work in designing equal opportunity policies in two areas: the distribution of health spending, and the purchasing power of individuals suffering some impairment of their health.
