The future EU will comprise a large number of nations and regions exhibiting a wide social and cultural diversity. Along with the advantages brought by a bigger market could come tensions provoked by the diversity of peoples obliged to live under the same social and political roof.

Hence the interest of constructing indices of cultural and social diversity among the nations forming part of the enlarged EU. These indices will be based on opinion surveys plus information on linguistic and also genetic diversity, drawn from databases not hitherto used for the study of the formation and union of nations.

Diversity indices can then be used to explore the empirical relationship between redistribution and diversity, and its implications for the future EU, identifying the winners and the losers out of enlargement.
