DESCRIPTION
Three hypotheses are put forward: (1) the social networks that organisations form determine their access to knowledge resources and to the creation of mechanisms favouring the inter-company exchange of such resources; (2) the proximity of organisations determines the intensity of their interrelations and responds to the spur of efficiently exploiting existing knowledge and technologies; (3) companies forming clusters combine their internal relations with other participants who have relations with external networks, as a way to gain access to new resources and respond to the challenge of opening up new founts of knowledge. These hypotheses will be tested in an empirical study of the Ceramics Industrial District. The results will provide an integrating model able to diagnose the case under study, and to elucidate mechanisms for inter-company exchanges and access to information.
