The aim of this study is to offer a framework for the ethical analysis of financial markets and institutions. It is a result of the debates that took place at the conference on The Ethical Dimension of Financial Institutions and Markets, organized by the BBV Foundation in 1994. Among the objects of reflection in the study are: the ethical dimension of economic activity, the social function of institutions and financial markets, the justification of profit, the excesses of indebtedness, and unethical conduct promoted by the system. The guiding idea is that there is an optimal social equilibrium that is more important than private equilibriums, and that improves the results of all those involved.
