The aim of this book is to explore the technology of production of the higher learning institutions. We offer empirical evidence that analyse the tecnical efficiency of the Spanish Department of Economics in the 90’s. The methodology used is based on the linear programming models that provide the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).
The results obtained reveal that it is possible to increase significantly the performance of the departments and show those departments with the most efficient productive practices. The assesment of Universities would allow to promote the competition, an increase in the efficiency and the quality of the services offered, contributing to optimize the economic and social performance of the university system.
