OPCE Report 2024

Social Sciences > Economics > Capitalization and Growth

The BBVA Foundation and Valencian Economic Research Institute’s joint research program numbers among its activities the Observatory of Productivity and Competitiveness in Spain (OPCE in its Spanish initials), whose aim is to generate data and conduct in-depth analyses on this all-important issue.

This second OPCE report (2024) is divided into two parts. The first provides an overview of the progress of Spanish productivity in the wake of the Great Recession, and examines how it was impacted by the pandemic from an aggregate, sectoral and regional perspective. It also charts Spain’s external competitiveness and its main drivers over the last few decades. Part two takes a closer look at productivity problems in Spain with a three-way focus. Firstly, it explores the relationship between regional productivity gaps and a wide range of employment, investment, and productive specialization characteristics proper to each autonomous community. Secondly, it uses company data to analyze Spanish productivity at the microeconomic level. And thirdly, it considers the implications of climate change for productivity analysis, due to the need both to broaden the set of relevant indicators and to factor sustainability in the design of productivity and innovation policies.

Part of the OPCE’s mission is to address this shortcoming, while providing the interested public with an extensive and detailed databank and a series of reports that analyze the issue from diverse standpoints.
