Unpaid Work, Time Use Surveys and Care Demand Forecasting in Latin America

Women’s share of the job market in Latin America is comparatively low, and employment‑based indicators, especially as regards formal employment, thus furnish little information on the actual distribution of labor and resources in the population as a whole. Of late, time use surveys have been carried out in the region, providing a better understanding of work performed outside the marketplace and a basis for setting up new satellite accounts.

Care demand in the period 2010-2050 has been forecast for the region as a whole and for selected countries (Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay) by applying the Madrid II scale to the population projections set out in World Population Prospects.
