VENUE Museo Nacional del Prado, calle Ruiz de Alarcón 23, Madrid 28014

Lorenzo Lotto (Venice, 1480–Loreto, 1556) is considered among the great Renaissance portraitists, for the range of typologies he employed, the psychological profundity of his studies, the symbolism that runs through his works, and the way the objects they contain bear witness to the material culture of the time and the sitter’s interests and aspirations. The documentary records conserved of his artistic output include unusually full details on the sitters’ identities, the way the portraits were created, and the prices they commanded.

The aim of this exhibition, co-organized by the Museo del Prado in Madrid and the National Gallery in London and sponsored by the BBVA Foundation, is to better acquaint the public with this important facet of Lotto’s artistic production. Bringing together paintings, drawings and objects, it is curated by Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo, Professor of Art History at the University of Verona and Miguel Falomir of the Museo del Prado.
