Maite Barroso López, a telecommunications engineer who joined CERN in 2001, and Pippa Wells, an experimental particle physicist, take part in the lecture series “CERN Restarts the LHC and Prepares for Its Future” to explain how computing makes it possible to manage the enormous volume of information generated by the Large Hadron Collider.
The conference explores the challenge of processing up to forty million images per second and selecting in real time which data should be retained for analysis. Barroso and Wells describe the synchronisation and filtering algorithms used to reconstruct events recorded by the different detector layers, identify the particles produced and distinguish the collisions of greatest scientific interest. They also examine the role of CERN’s computing infrastructure and its technological impact beyond fundamental research.

The BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture series “CERN Restarts the LHC and Prepares for Its Future”. The programme addresses current and future challenges in particle physics, the restart of the accelerator at unprecedented energy levels and CERN’s strategy in high-energy and nuclear physics, as well as the role of technologies, computing systems and data processing in large-scale scientific infrastructures.
