Awarded the 12th Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Ecology, Daniel Pauly explains in this interview how overfishing and changes in marine ecosystems are transforming the planet’s oceans. Drawing on decades of global research, he explains how biases in traditional data have obscured the true extent of declining fish populations and why it is urgent to rethink fishing practices to preserve biodiversity and the livelihoods that depend on the sea. His perspective combines rigorous science with a call to action to protect marine systems.

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Information and Communications Technology category has gone in this twelfth edition to Isabelle Guyon, Bernhard Schölkopf and Vladimir Vapnik, for their “fundamental contributions to machine learning,” in the words of the committee.
