Frédérick Bordry, Director of CERN’s Accelerators and Technology Sector since 2014, opens the lecture series “CERN Restarts the LHC and Prepares for Its Future” with a talk focused on the new phase of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the technological challenges involved in bringing it back into operation.

Following a two-year technical shutdown, the LHC resumed data taking in 2015 at a record energy of 13 TeV. Bordry explains the process required to reach this level of performance and reviews the main technical challenges of a 27-kilometre-circumference infrastructure designed to explore matter at the energy frontier. He also presents planned upgrades to the accelerator and its detectors through the High-Luminosity LHC programme and outlines some of the scientific and technological options for the post-LHC era.

The BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture
