José Miguel Jiménez, Head of CERN’s Technology Department, and Mar Capeáns, Head of CERN’s Detector Technology Group, take part in the lecture series “LHC Run 2: Driving Technology and Tackling Open Questions” with a session devoted to the inner workings of the Large Hadron Collider and its detection systems.
The conference follows the journey of a proton travelling at nearly the speed of light around the LHC’s 27-kilometre ring before colliding inside one of its detectors. Through this journey, the speakers present the technologies that make it possible to accelerate, control and record particles with extreme precision, as well as the scientific, industrial and educational impact of these major infrastructures. The session concludes by examining the advances required to develop the next generation of accelerators and detectors.

The BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture series “LHC Run 2: Driving Technology and Tackling Open Questions”. The programme explores the new phase of operation of the Large Hadron Collider, its scientific goals and associated technological developments, while also examining its contribution to innovation, training and international collaboration.
