“Music is above all a social activity, something you do with others. What matters most is how we interact with the colleagues we work with”

Awarded the 14th BBVAFrontiers of Knowledge Award in Music and Opera, Philip Glass shares his vision of the creative process and the evolution of his musical language in this interview. He reflects on the origins of minimalism, the importance of rhythm and repetition, and the search for direct expressiveness that has marked his work for decades. His testimony offers an intimate look at the development of a style that has profoundly influenced contemporary music and the way audiences engage with it.

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Music and Opera has gone in this fourteenth edition to Philip Glass “for his extraordinary contribution to musical creation and opera, with a major impact in the music history of the 20th and 21st centuries,” in the words of the award committee.
