A specialist in collider particle physics, Eckhard Elsen has pursued his research career at institutions including the universities of Hamburg, Stanford and Heidelberg. In this lecture, he examines the first results obtained during the second phase of operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
After resuming operations in 2015, the LHC began producing proton and lead-ion collisions at unprecedented energies. Elsen reviews the data collected during 2015 and 2016, the expectations generated by the first observations and the role of high-luminosity collisions in confirming possible signs of new physics. He also examines the implications of these results for the Standard Model and the new lines of research opened up in particle physics.

The BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture series “CERN Restarts the LHC and Prepares for Its Future”. The programme addresses current and future challenges in particle physics, the restart of the accelerator at unprecedented energy levels and CERN’s strategy in high-energy and nuclear physics, as well as the role of technologies, computing systems and data processing in large-scale scientific infrastructures.
