Juan Alcaraz, principal investigator of the CMS project at CIEMAT, examines the search for and discovery of the Higgs boson, a fundamental particle for understanding the Standard Model and the origin of mass. Its detection in 2012 through the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) marked one of the major milestones in recent particle physics.

Alcaraz explains the experimental challenges involved in identifying an extremely unstable particle and the sophisticated methods developed to detect it and measure its properties. He also discusses research aimed at determining its characteristics more precisely and exploring new phenomena and particles that could broaden our understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe.

To mark the 60th anniversary of CERN, the BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture series “The Secrets of Particles: Fun
