Lucio Rossi, leader of CERN’s High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, examines the role of superconductivity in the development of major scientific infrastructures and in the creation of technologies with increasingly broad applications.
When certain materials reach extremely low temperatures, they lose their electrical resistance and can carry large currents without dissipating energy. Rossi explains how this property makes it possible to build the powerful electromagnets used in accelerators such as the LHC and in experimental fusion reactors, as well as to transmit electricity through superconducting cables. The conference also explores its use in magnetic resonance imaging and the technical, economic and industrial challenges that still limit its wider adoption.

In 2018, the BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the 4th lecture series “CERN and the BBVA Foundation: Challenges in Particle Physics”, entitled “The Technological and Globalised Dimension of Science”. The programme addresses the challenges involved in keeping particle physics research at the forefront of knowledge, from developing more powerful and precise experiments to optimising costs, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact, and promoting responsible research and innovation.
