José Miguel Jiménez, Head of CERN’s Technology Department, presents an overview of the technological complexity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its associated detection systems.

His lecture examines the advances required in areas such as superconductivity, magnets, vacuum technology, radiofrequency systems, precision mechanics and detector electronics. Jiménez also shows how the LHC serves as a platform for testing innovations, pre-industrialising new solutions and fostering collaboration between research centres, universities and companies. Particular attention is given to Spain’s participation in CERN projects and to the technological and international value this experience brings to companies and institutions.

To mark the 60th anniversary of CERN, the BBVA Foundation and CERN jointly organise the lecture series “The Secrets of Particles: Fundamental Physics in E
