On the occasion of receiving the 15th BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Music and Opera, composer Thomas Adès explains in this interview how his work connects musical tradition, emotion, and innovation. Adès reflects on the balance between reason and instinct in the creative process, his aim to create timeless music, and his view of composition as a journey into the unknown. Through examples from his repertoire —spanning opera, chamber, and orchestral music— he illustrates how his language redefines genres with contemporary sensitivity and a deep connection to the audience.

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Music and Opera has gone in this fifteenth edition to Thomas Adès for “the extraordinary international reach of his work, which has made him one of the most acclaimed musicians of our time,” in the words of the award committee.
