Lecture by Professor Viatcheslav Mukhanov from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, recipient of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences. In this talk, Mukhanov reviews the major milestones of modern cosmology and reflects on how physics enables us to understand the origin of the universe from quantum vacuum.
The lecture discusses the enormous progress in our understanding of the origin and structure of our universe made during the last 90 years. In particular, it concentrates on the origin of galaxies, stars and planets from initial quantum fluctuations. This hypothesis put forward more than 30 years ago has been spectacularly confirmed by numerous very recent measurements of the fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.
This lecture is part of the astrophysics series ‘The Science of the Cosmos, the Science in the Cosmos,’

This lecture is part of the astrophysics series ‘The Science of the Cosmos, the Science in the Cosmos,’ which explores the most pressing questions in modern astrophysics.
The lectures in the sixth edition focus on our cosmic origin, as well as the fact that gravity, the most familiar and important force in the universe’s evolution, continues to pose some challenging questions.
