In the wake of the second oil crisis of 1979, the governments in the OECD area introduced a package of policy measures that aimed to prevent expansion in public expenditure. These and other trends during the decade of the 1980s in the public sector are analyzed in this study. It is completed with a discussion of some of the changes that have taken place in the mindset of politicians in terms of the role of the public sector.
