The rapid growth of the world population remains the biggest demographic challenge, since if we don’t achieve a zero growth rate in the near future, it will be very difficult to ensure a life with dignity for all inhabitants of the planet. The task of improving living conditions in less developed countries is being hampered by the persistent increase in their populations. The results of the census round of 2020 are crucial to estimate the current size of the world population and the rate at which it has been increasing, and to project likely future trends. An analysis of the expected coverage of the 2020 round identifies the areas and activities that require greater attention and effort, to improve results in comparison to past rounds.
